RECONSTRUCTION PARTNERCHABAHAR CORRIDORNO TALIBAN RECOGNITIONHUMANITARIAN AID
India and Afghanistan share deep civilisational, cultural and strategic bonds, with India investing over $3 billion in reconstruction projects after the 2001 US-led intervention. The Taliban takeover in August 2021 upended the relationship dramatically: India evacuated its diplomatic missions, suspended official bilateral engagement, and has not recognised the Taliban government. Despite this, India has continued channelling humanitarian aid and maintains interest in Afghan stability through the Chabahar port corridor.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
Relations remain effectively suspended at the diplomatic level, with no Indian diplomatic presence in Afghanistan and no recognition of the Taliban government. India continues to provide humanitarian assistance via Chabahar and UN agencies, and monitors the situation closely given Afghanistan's importance to regional security and India's substantial historical investment. A restoration of normal relations is contingent on changes in Taliban governance that are not currently visible.
