India & Bulgaria

EU MEMBERCOLD WAR ERA TIESPHARMACEUTICAL EXPORTSIT SERVICES PARTNER

India and Bulgaria share one of the longer bilateral relationships in Europe, having established diplomatic ties in 1954 during the Cold War period when both countries navigated the superpower contest from different positions — Bulgaria as a Warsaw Pact member, India as a Non-Aligned Movement leader. Despite the ideological distance, the two countries maintained active commerce and cultural exchange through the 1960s–80s. Post-1989 Bulgaria's democratisation, NATO membership (2004), and EU accession (2007) transformed the bilateral context, and the relationship has since evolved into a conventional European bilateral — pharmaceutical exports, IT services, growing tourism, and educational ties — with historical warmth as an additional asset.

CURRENT STATE

Where things stand, 2026

The India-Bulgaria relationship is commercially active but institutionally modest, operating primarily through pharmaceutical trade, IT services, and the EU framework. Bulgaria's importance to India is growing as Indian IT companies identify it as an affordable EU-based technology hub. The bilateral relationship is friendly and free of disputes. The EU-India FTA negotiations, if concluded, would be the most significant commercial event for the India-Bulgaria relationship in the post-accession era.
