India recognised Georgia's independence in December 1991 and operationalised a resident mission in Tbilisi only in July 2024. The relationship has been developing steadily, with bilateral trade reaching USD 298 million in 2023-24 and approximately USD 769 million in Indian investment in steel, infrastructure, agriculture, and services. Georgia hosts over 25,000 Indian medical students at its 25 universities, making education the most dynamic bilateral track. A Free Trade Agreement feasibility study was completed in January 2019, though negotiations are yet to begin.

Where things stand, 2026
Relations are on an upswing since the resident mission opened in Tbilisi in 2024. The 25,000+ Indian medical students in Georgia are the most dynamic bilateral link. Daily direct flights since August 2024 have improved connectivity. Trade is growing but below the peak of 2022-23. FTA feasibility is established; formal negotiations remain pending. Tourism and film-production ties are expanding.
