Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China since 1997, governed under the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework. India's relationship with Hong Kong is conducted in this context: India does not maintain a separate bilateral diplomatic relationship with Hong Kong distinct from its relationship with China, but maintains a Consulate General in Hong Kong that serves Indian nationals and manages trade and commercial ties. Hong Kong has historically been a major trading hub for India, serving as a re-export gateway to mainland China and Southeast Asia, and hosts a longstanding Indian-origin community of approximately 28,000.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
India's commercial relationship with Hong Kong remains substantial, driven primarily by diamond trade and electronics imports. The political changes since 2019-20 have introduced uncertainty into Hong Kong's role as an international financial centre, but have not materially disrupted bilateral trade. India maintains a non-interventionist posture on Hong Kong's political developments. The India-China bilateral tension since 2020 adds complexity to the Hong Kong relationship, which remains commercially important despite geopolitical headwinds.
