FIPIC MEMBERISA MEMBERITEC COOPERATIONCDRI MEMBER

India and Kiribati maintain cordial relations, elevated institutionally by the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC). Kiribati — a Pacific island nation spread across 33 atolls straddling the equator — faces existential threat from climate change and sea level rise, making India's partnership on renewable energy and climate resilience particularly relevant. Diplomatic relations were established in 1992.

CURRENT STATE

Where things stand, 2026

India-Kiribati relations are friendly but low-intensity, consistent with Kiribati's micro-island status. The FIPIC framework is the primary vehicle for engagement. Climate change and renewable energy represent both a shared concern and an area where India can offer tangible support. ISA and CDRI membership provides institutional links. Trade is negligible. India's High Commission in Suva manages the relationship.
