Macao is a Special Administrative Region of China, transferred from Portuguese administration in December 1999. India's formal relations with Macao are conducted through India's relationship with China, with the Indian Consulate General in Hong Kong also accredited to Macao. The territory has a long history as a Portuguese colonial entrepôt and briefly hosted an Indian trading community. Today Macao is primarily known as the world's largest gaming and tourism hub; the bilateral economic relationship is minimal but includes some Indian tourism, pharmaceutical exports, and historical cultural ties.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
India-Macao relations are minimal in formal diplomatic terms — engagement is managed through India's Consulate General in Hong Kong — but growing in practical tourism and pharmaceutical trade terms. Macao's gaming and heritage tourism draws increasing numbers of Indian visitors, and pharmaceutical exports maintain a modest trade channel. The relationship is secondary to India's broader China relationship framework.
