FIPIC MEMBERCLIMATE VULNERABILITYPACIFIC ISLANDS FORUMUN COORDINATION

India and the Marshall Islands established diplomatic relations in 1991. The bilateral relationship is primarily conducted through the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) framework and multilateral platforms including the UN, where the Marshall Islands is a significant voice on climate change and nuclear disarmament. The Marshall Islands carries a unique historical burden — the US conducted 67 nuclear weapons tests on its Bikini and Enewetak atolls between 1946 and 1958 — and is among the world's most vulnerable nations to sea-level rise. India's engagement reflects its Pacific Islands diplomacy and shared concern for climate justice.

CURRENT STATE

Where things stand, 2026

India-Marshall Islands relations are minimal in bilateral scope but meaningful in multilateral terms. India engages the Marshall Islands primarily through FIPIC and on climate change and nuclear disarmament at the UN. The Marshall Islands' catastrophic nuclear testing legacy and extreme climate vulnerability give it a moral authority in multilateral forums that India respects. Development assistance through FIPIC and ITEC provides a practical bilateral channel.
