INDIA-AFRICA FORUMLNG IMPORTSDEVELOPMENT PARTNERHISTORIC DIASPORALINES OF CREDIT

India and Mozambique share a relationship shaped by historic Indian Ocean trading connections, a small but commercially influential Indian-origin community, and Mozambique's emergence as a major LNG producer in which Indian energy companies have a significant stake. Mozambique's Rovuma Basin holds some of the world's largest natural gas discoveries; India's energy security interest in securing LNG from Mozambique has elevated the relationship. Development cooperation through India's Africa Forum process and Lines of Credit is active across agriculture, healthcare, and infrastructure.

CURRENT STATE

Where things stand, 2026

The India-Mozambique relationship is in an active phase driven by energy security interests. The Mozambique LNG (Area 1) project — in which ONGC Videsh holds equity — has restarted after the Cabo Delgado security disruption. The Coral FLNG (Eni/Petronet) is operational. India's development cooperation through the Africa Forum framework and Lines of Credit is delivering across agriculture, healthcare, and infrastructure. The bilateral relationship is expected to deepen substantially once LNG production from Area 1 reaches full capacity.
