Nauru is among the world's smallest nations — a 21 sq km phosphate island in the central Pacific with a population of around 10,000. India and Nauru established diplomatic relations at Nauru's independence in 1968, though practical engagement was minimal for decades. The Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC), established in 2014, revitalised India-Nauru ties within a broader Pacific outreach strategy, with India offering development assistance, capacity-building and disaster relief support to this climate-vulnerable microstate.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
India-Nauru relations are functional but limited by the vast difference in size and the practical constraints of a microstate economy. FIPIC remains the primary institutional vehicle for the relationship, and programmatic assistance through solar energy, healthcare equipment, and ITEC training constitutes the core practical content. Nauru's switch to PRC recognition in 2024 has not affected India-Nauru ties.
