India & Niger
DEVELOPMENT PARTNERINDIA-AFRICA FORUMITEC TRAININGURANIUM INTEREST
India and Niger established diplomatic relations upon Niger's independence from France in 1960. The relationship has been shaped by India's broader Africa engagement, South-South cooperation principles, and — increasingly — Niger's strategic importance as one of the world's largest uranium producers. Niger's political instability, culminating in the military coup of July 2023, has complicated the bilateral relationship and suspended normal diplomatic engagement for a period, though India has maintained its commitment to the Nigerien people through development programmes.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
India-Niger relations are maintained at a low level of intensity, shaped by Niger's domestic political instability since 2023, the complex Sahel security environment, and India's interest in Niger's uranium resources. Development cooperation through ITEC and pharmaceutical supply continues. The uranium opportunity is real but requires a stable political and regulatory framework that does not yet exist.
