DEVELOPMENT PARTNERITEC TRAININGUN ALIGNMENTEU ACCESSION CONTEXT
India and North Macedonia established diplomatic relations in 1993, following the country's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The relationship is limited in scope — North Macedonia is a small Balkan nation of 2.1 million people in the midst of EU and NATO accession processes — but cordial, shaped by shared support for multilateral rules-based order and India's development cooperation. The country joined NATO in 2020 and is a candidate for EU membership, which provides the primary context for its foreign policy priorities.

CURRENT STATE
Where things stand, 2026
India-North Macedonia relations are cordial but minimal. The bilateral relationship is sustained through ITEC training and modest trade flows, with no significant commercial, diaspora, or defence ties. North Macedonia's EU accession process is its primary foreign policy focus, and its alignment with EU positions on international affairs sometimes diverges from India's positions. The relationship would benefit from more deliberate engagement, possibly through India-EU or India-Western Balkans frameworks.
