India and Sweden established diplomatic relations in 1949 and maintain a relationship built on trade, technology and innovation cooperation. Sweden is home to major companies with significant India presence — Saab (defence), Volvo, Ericsson, IKEA, H&M and Spotify — and is a key partner for India in defence, clean technology and advanced manufacturing. Sweden supported India's membership in export control groups and is a voice for India's interests in EU deliberations.

Where things stand, 2026
The relationship is active and commercially vibrant, with Swedish MNCs deeply embedded in India's telecom, manufacturing and retail sectors. The clean technology and innovation partnership offers significant potential for deepening. Defence cooperation centres on Saab's Make in India ambitions but no major contract has been concluded. Ericsson's 5G contracts are the most consequential current commercial engagement.
